The Yamaha Stagepass seems popular, as a combact 300w digital system: -

I also like the idea you can get a carry case for it, and it gives an idea of truly how compact it is!

If you wanted something with slightly larger kahunas, there's also a 500w version (my fave): -

If you want to move away from the big names, you can get a lot more bang for your buck, not quite as compact perhaps, and maybe a little more complext to set-up and use: -

I'll do some more digging, but those were the ones that stood out from a quick google. I imagine at the larger venues they'll either supply a PA, or you'll rent one, either way you'll not care about it being compact/lightweight etc :)

Hmmm, that Yamaha jobbie seems to the 'the' PA of the moment.

Here's a non-ebay link that has some additional information - but anyone who's anyone is selling it: -

I also took at look at monitoring.

Yamaha do some monitors to go with the above Stagepass system. They seem nice, same kind of design as the Stagepass speakers but they're powered.

However, the price of IEM (In Ear Monitoring) has now dropped enough to make it viable for small/medium sized venues. A little more money, but never any feedback issues, perfect sound from venue-to-venue and 'way' less gear to carry around.

You've certainly been doing some investigative work! I am just trying to digest all that.

Not sure how I would get on with in-ear monitoring, never tried it. Anyone else got any thoughts on that one?

Very true, they are exclusive (you can't hear what's going on outside of them) so you only get to hear clearly what's actually going into the PA.
